Re: Sarge
We’ll ignore most of my memories of sarge on a cricket pitch as they were mostly the same. Him batting my team out of the game. However one year I changed tactics. Before the game started I said you’ve never hit me for six to which he replied but you’ve never bowled me. For 12 overs I bust a gut trying to beat his defence but got the same response, block, nurdle, leave alone. Eventually my spell ended with him 20 odd not out. My replacement came on , and bowled a rank long hop. 1 fielder in the deep and sarge put it straight down his throat.
In all my years playing cricket I never saw anyone laugh at his own dismissal so much. |

Re: Sarge
I asked him this many years ago after years of calling him Sarge. He said his dad was in local plays and always played the police sergeant. So his dad was called Sarge and it just passed down to him. He said this with a straight face and seemed too bizarre not to be true.

Re: Sarge
Did someone say Sarge was from Rhostyllen? Remember from my Bryn Offa days loads of kids having nicknames passed down to them or being called after their dad's or taid's occupation. Great place.
Like so many others, got to know Sarge a little bit from home and away games. Familiar faces and all that. What an absolute gent. Last saw him to speak to in Erddig while we were both out walking with our respective partners. He spoke to us both like he'd known us for years. Lovely man, and I'm sure he'll be sadly missed by those who knew him well. |

Re: Sarge
No Ive not been drinking. Ok just a glass or 2!
This was the worst news of the week by far. Ricketts about to leave us, just doesn't really compare, to an extremely nice fella at such a young age. Wonder what he would say about it all? People really need some perspective in life. |
