Absolutely, January should be used to replace players who are injured etc. I agree with all of the above. Especially about getting business done by mid July. I guess the positive is that we have a good back 5 to work with and some decent squad players. The only problem is that the transfer market is so hit and miss. The chances of recruiting quality in all 3 forward positions is unlikely.

Come the January window the only players available are those unwanted / not making the grade at their own clubs or those out of contract - common factor in this is that the majority have been starved of game time and are not match fit and up to speed - hence our latest recruits in a last throw of the dice to save our season - Augustien who hopefully will make a difference but hasn't been playing or untried untested youngsters like Massanka, Pyke, and now Spyrou - we will all be rejoicing if they come good but if they fail it's be a case of 'I told you so' - same old short term panic signings / loanees.

The hard work should all but be done before mid July - I don't know how many players we have used this season but we must be up there as a club who have used more than most - when I look at the teamsheets of Orient, Solihull, Fylde and to a lesser extent Salford the line ups appear pretty stable excluding the inevitable injuries. We have swopped and changed all season up front with numerous players / formations and none of it has truly worked to any degree of satisfaction.
We had Masssanka for 12 months and he was garbage and what do we do we take him for a further 12 months, what a fliping joke.

Previously it has also been said that we seems to go for 'players of versatility' - those that can cover a number of positions rather than say, a specialist right winger.
Perhaps there needs to be more emphasis of selecting less quantity and more quality in vital positions - I also wonder about the quality of the defence in gaining so many clean sheets - but in reality is the whole team set up with 'defence at all costs' as a priority over the need to score goals ? how many times do we drop back so deep it almost looks like we are inviting the opposition to attack us - sometimes it appears a deliberate tactic so we can hit them on the counter attack whilst they are stretched and out of position - because we hardly score more than a goal in a game. It's so frustrating.

Whilst I agree with the players should be signed up early after season end, I think a few reasons why our recruitment is poor no scouts, players should be scouted through the season to judge what players available will be worth signing, problem is we change manager just before pre season who then has to rely on contacts for who to sign. It's all gambling hit or miss.
