Default Reserves

Regardless where we are next season, one thing that is required is having a reserve team playing in a league....
Up till the late 60s reserves played in the Cheshire league, against teams such as Altrincham, Northwich, Witton, Bangor Rhyl, Wigan, Macclesfield Stafford rangers.
A team played in Welsh league North and b team in Wnl wxm..
70s saw teams in Welsh league North wnlwxm and floodlit league..
The fringe players need to be playing at some level to keep active

Those floodlight league games were fun. We had some strong youngsters then and watching their progression was enjoyable.
And floodlit games always have a great atmosphere.

Is our squad big enough and are our kids good enough to sustain a full reserve season? Answer to the former is no at present. Don’t know about how good the kids are. The last thing the kids need is getting battered every week.

It’s been mentioned somewhere that we’re looking at it. But I can’t remember where.

I can't remember a time when we have had as many full time players on our squad, even when we competing in both the Welsh National & Northern Floodlit Leagues. Set ups are different now and players aren't flogged like they were in those days but most reserve teams were made up of apprentices, first year professionals and a few first teamers. It was great experience for the likes of Smallman, Fogg Thomas Joey, Dwyer, Lyons and Ashcroft etc

In 19881/82 I played for Holywell Town against both Wrexham and Chester reserves. They were in the then Clwyd League for one season for some reason.

I can’t remember which league they went into after that.

The squad is big enough but when you sign 4/5 players who have very bad injury records then possibly No.

A few weeks ago Joey Jones said how the lack of a reserve team was a massive contributing factor to the lack of success for the first team in recent years

I read an article by Graham Whittle who said the best experience for young players was playing in a man's league against uncompromising players. Best grounding they had playing in the Welsh national League. I imagine reserves would play in a north west league, the club needs reserves playing every week and at 18 they are quite old enough to hold their own.
