Easy comment to make as if we do win the league with him playing a prominent role it is unlikely he will play every game. He has done everything to deserve an extension and can ,for me, still play a role. Grimsby re-signed Pearson and he played a limited role but they went up. If Luke does not play every game he still deserves this extension and will always do a job. You know what you are getting with him and he is consistent. I see him as our Milner.

Really don't get the froth on this. He's a good player. I'm sure even he'll admit he didn't have a great start to the season last year.

Opinions wanted - would Luke Young have been given a two year contract if we'd gone into L2 or just a one year deal?

I hear lots on here saying he is decent for NL, but that's where it ends.

Not a great deal of difference between the two leagues IMO other than the completely unfair promotion/relegation. Personally I would still have given him two years.

It's not all about the 90 minutes on Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon that you need to build a promotion winning squad. Very unfair criticism in my opinion while the big earners errors are forgotten about - Mullin's red cards and Tozer's underwhelming season.
Tozer underwhelming ? Played every single game, had to adapt to a new pairing either side of him almost every other game and nursed a couple of youngsters through due to injuries, oh and 14 assists !!

Apart from that, completely underwhelming.

He would have had the opportunity..it was a trigger in his existing contract that if he played so many games he was entitled to take up a further year.

So, in all likelihood, yes..if we had been promoted Young would still be here and on his new contract.

Definitely worth another 2 years, whether we’re in the NL or the FL - comfortably good enough to be at least a squad player in L2. Only unusual thing about last year was the lack of goals after the previous couple of seasons.

For me the slightly bigger question is whether he’ll retain the capitancy?

I don't get the RP fixation on squad filler, bench warmer or first 11, players need to be good enough to compete and when given their opportunity, keep a starting place. We will have have our biggest and possibly strongest squad ever, certainly bigger and possibly stronger than 78 Div 2 championship squad, so any player losing their starting berth, for whatever reason, injury, suspension, loss of form or tactical switch, should have a mighty task to get back in.

I appreciate its difficult with big money signings like Mullin, Palmer, Tozer and Hayden, but we need healthy competition and more occasions where players of ToC's pedigree having to bide their time to get a shirt as it breeds that sharp competetive edge. The manager needs to be strong, but I'm sure PP and his backroom can take it in their stride.
