It's halfway through a promising season and we find ourselves on a bit of a cup run, so inevitably the old worry about fixture congestion, irrelevent cup ties, and distractions from promotion are circling again. I thought I would do a little research into how many extra matches some of our rivals of yesteryear fared.

I've attached a document of what I came up with but here's a summary:

2021-22
Champion Stockport County - 9 extra games
2nd Place Wrexham - 8 extra games

2020-21
Champion Sutton United - 4 extra games
8th Place Wrexham - 2 extra games

2019-20
Champion Barrow - 4 extra games
19th place Wrexham - 4 extra games

2018-19
Champion Leyton Orient - 8 extra games
4th place Wrexham - 6 extra games

2017-18
Champions Macclesfield Town - 3 extra games
10th place Wrexham - 2 extra games

2016-17
Champions Lincoln City - 14 extra games
13th place Wrexham - 3 extra games

2015-16
Champions Cheltenham Town - 5 extra games
8th place Wrexham - 3 extra games

2014-15
Champions Barnet - 4 extra games
11th place Wrexham - 15 extra games

2013-14
Champions Luton Town - 6 extra games
17th place Wrexham - 4 extra games

2012-13
Champions Mansfield Town - 8 extra games
5th place Wrexham - 9 extra games

2011-12
Champions Fleetwood Town - 7 extra games
2nd place Wrexham - 6 extra games

2010-11
Champions Crawley Town - 9 extra games
4th place Wrexham - 3 extra games

2009-10
Champtions Stevenage Borough - 10 extra games
11th place Wrexham - 5 extra games

So for the last 13 seasons those finishing about us have played more games than us on 10 occasions. Additionally, in looking back at this, the national league champions have had some very memorable cup runs like Lincoln's QF FA Cup run in 16-17 and Crawley's 0-1 defeat in the 5th round at Old Trafford. In five of the last 13 seasons the league champion has reached the semi final or final of the FA Trophy, three of them going all the way.

Yes, fixture congestion causes issues. No, the above is by no means conclusive of anything. But looking back at how some of our past rivals have managed successful cup runs in their promotion seasons I wish we could all settle down and enjoy the special days out without the doom and gloom. We have a fit squad with amazing stength in depth, and I think that is what will see us over the line.

Interesting stats which should allay some folks’ growing worries. Nevertheless, ultimately, it will be how we manage the players and whether Lady Luck loves R&R.

It's a non story. In our greatest ever season, with a much smaller squad we won the title, reached the QF of both the FA Cup and League Cup and won the Welsh Cup.

This is more a story that Notts fans are peddling as a grain of comfort to hold onto.

I can't pin a season where a team has missed out on the top spot because of extra cup games. Ultimately the best team will finish on top.

I think if we get out of the Trophy we'll be fine

The best practice is playing matches. Can' remember who said that but it was somebody who knew what they were talking about. Injures are a worry but we've had players injured in training and even in the warm ups.
