Akil Wright Signs (loan deal)
Following a week training with the club, we are pleased to welcome Akil Wright to the Racecourse on loan until 5 January 2018. The 21-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Fleetwood Town, as part of their development squad, following his transfer to Highbury in March 2015 and they recently triggered an option in his contract to retain his services for a further season. During this period, he has also enjoyed loan spells with AFC Flyde, scoring twice in four appearances, and then six months at Barrow, playing 24 times, including two substitute appearances against the Reds in 2016/17. Akil, a native of Derby, is a product of the successful Ilkeston academy system, having joined the Robins aged 15, going on to amass some 40 appearances for their first-team, all before he turned 19. As we have seen, his preferred position is as a central midfielder, but he also demonstrated his versatility by breaking through in to the Ilkeston first-team in central defence or right-back. His performances didn`t go unnoticed and in March 2015 Akil completed a whirlwind transfer to League One Fleetwood. After impressing in The Fishermen’s development side during the weeks following his arrival, he was named as a substitute in the Football League for the first time in April 2015 against MK Dons. “I have enjoyed my brief spell with the club, which has been something of whirlwind with games in Wales, Portugal and England so far!” he said. “Initially, I didn’t realise how many new players have arrived here over the summer, but the manager has brought together a very impressive squad ready for the upcoming season. “It’s gone well so far and when offered the chance to join on loan, I wasn’t going to turn down the opportunity. “I know the league well from playing with Barrow for most of last season and I think I can contribute this team. I want to be playing first team football and really looking forward to the season starting.” |
