Chester's new manager organised a behind closed doors friendly against Salford City yesterday. The team was apparently made up of fringe players, youth players and trialists.

What a bloody good idea.

I thought this was our plan going forward too.

Dean seems to be a get them into training type of guy and then watch them in proper matches, either for us in pre-season or for their clubs like in Archers case.

Not many triallists made the next level for us though.

This whole argument regarding the efficacy of an FA Cup run is an interesting one.

Does a lengthy FA Cup run impinge on league performance?

Numerous posters have suggested it didn't do Lincoln any harm last season, but did it?

OK, they became the first non-league club in 103 years to reach the quarter-finals and made around £2.5 million from it. The money has set them up for several years to come.

After that, they went on to win the National League title with an impressive 99 points.

All good stuff, I'm sure you will agree.

Danny Cowley believes the cup run was good for the league challenge because it kept them playing twice a week. It enabled them to build genuine momentum, and the lift the players must have got from beating the likes of Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley must have been carried into league games.

There are lots of things that Lincoln did brilliantly last season, and very few could deny that they fully deserved the success that came their way.

But they were also very lucky, and that cannot be overlooked.

Many fans believed that playing so many games (they played 61, including a run to the semi-finals of the FA Trophy) with a relatively small squad would surely have an effect on the players in negative ways, and that proved very accurate. With 10 league games to go, the players were dead on their feet. Two players had stress injuries (Habergham and Farman) caused by playing too much football, but they had to play on because they had no one else. There was no way they could find the energy to win the league, and we believed the advantage had been handed to Tranmere.

But somehow they found the energy to win seven games in a row to take the title with two games remaining. They came back from the dead so many times - for example, they scored 2 in the last 4 minutes against Torquay and 2 in the last 3 minutes at Gateshead in successive games to turn no points into six. It was incredible to watch, and beyond any attempt to explain it.

Lincoln should not have been able to do what they did last season, but it happened.

Under normal circumstances, it should be impossible. Everything came together at the right time, and it was probably luck that bound it all together.

If you want Wrexham to mount a serious challenge this season, don't be disappointed to be out of the FA Cup. The chances of making huge money out of it like Lincoln did are almost nil. Focus on getting out of that league, because 10 years is quite long enough.
