Who was that referee from Anglesey a small chap he never gave us anything. I was told he hated Wrexham but I cannot remember why. This was many years ago,

Wasn't he convicted after Heysel?

Headteacher and caravan salesman. Refereed as if he had a grudge against Wrexham. Ended up linked to Bangor City.

For those with longer memories, circa 1969, during the John Neal/Gordon Lee era of rivalry, Tommy Mclaren, Port Vale legendary winger niggled Dave Gaskell all game in a home match, so much so that Gaskell dropped the ball in the last minute only for Mclaren to tap in for the equaliser in a 1-1 draw. This very much annoyed the home supporters in the large crowd of 18,000. Four seasons later I was having a post-match drink with Vale player Tony Lacey, a friend of mine, after Wrexham had been narrowly defeated at Vale Park when both Arfon Griffiths and Eddie May among others lost their heads with the referee over a tackle by Mclaren. A group of troublesome Wrexham supporters came into the social club bar and verbally abused the 'hated' Mclaren. Lacey had to take him quietly away into the players' bar as a consequence. Sadly, Mclaren committed suicide in his own garage a few years' later after failing to come to terms with his release from Vale.
