Default Penalty!

A win, secured by yesterday's penalty, was very welcome!

Listening on Calon FM, the commentator briefly spoke about the number of penalties awarded to us compared with those awarded to our opponents over the last 7 seasons.

Many fans feel that we are not exactly favoured by the officials when it comes to penalty awards - with too many being awarded against us while we have too few awarded to us.

So it was a bit of a surprise when he said (wearing his best anorak) that in those 7 years, we'd had about 35 given against us.... but 45 or so awarded to us. For him, that indicated that the refs treat us more than fairly. But that might only be half the story...

In most games, we will have at least one clear-cut penalty shout. I wonder what percentage of those shouts lead to a penalty being awarded though? Yesterday's was only the first this season!

In comparison, do more shouts against us result in penalties being awarded?

But the number of penalties awarded for and against us isn't necessarily the only opportunity for bias by the officials. We come up against dirty teams that will foul us rather than concede a goal (and we will do the same, but do we do it as often as they do, or more so?) Similarly, opposition sides will dive or claim penalties in other ways to fool the refs - as I'm sure we do too.

Are we more guilty, or less so, than our opponents? I suppose we'll never know unless stats are kept, which I doubt.

Another interesting aspect is the number of penalties awarded that we convert into goals - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wrex...eldata=CNAT%26 provides answers for the curious.

So - do we get our fair share - or do we lose out in the penalties department?

To get more penalties we need to look more dangerous in the box.
Improve the quality of our attacking play.

Over the last 7 seasons we've been upper half of the league in the main, which would suggest we're more often than not, attacking more than a good chunk of the opposition which you could suggest would lead to more penalty shouts. Over the years I don't remember going to games thinking we've got away with one there in comparison to thinking we should have had a penalty.

In short, being one of the play-off/automatic contenders most years, we should be in a position to have more penalty shouts for us than against us, especially with good quality defenders which we've generally had.

A rather negative response if you don’t mind me saying ?
Personally I don’t think officials are against us. However in one game last season the idiots in front of us in the moan road called the ref a c*** during the first half and I am certain he gave us nothing second half including two penalty shouts

How is it negative?
Blaming the officials over again is negative IMO.
In most sports the better you are the luckier you seem to get.

We dont get penalties because we are not dangerous enough in the box or maybe clever enough on some occassions.

Man City get penalties because their forwards are far superior in quality to the opposition defenders, previously Franny Lee was an expert in conning the ref.
