Putting the association with Moss aside. Saunders knew how he wanted the team to play. He was even fit enough to play in reserve games and coach players on the pitch. He probably did the same with the first team squad.
The biggest thing that let Saunders down but also made him relatively successful was his Ego. But then again he'd been there and done it at the highest level. A lot to be proud of.
Couldn't fault his enthusiasm.

He had the money to do it, it would have been strange if he didn't. I just think it's interesting he wasn't afraid to take risks on players with dodgy pasts, or no direct experience of the league we were in.
I listed them a few weeks ago, can’t remember the thread, but it was north of 30.

And it took him 2 seasons before he had got to grips with the league and realised what was needed player wise. Had we have been able to keep him I doubt we'd still be in non league now.

Problem is as soon as we get a manager who starts doing well they can't wait to jump ship, which is a huge problem.

I see Hughes being similar to Saunders. It may take some time for him to get it right. But he probably won't get it. Which makes his appointment very strange besides the fact he was plucked from nowhere.

Ego or "valley bravado" is something our south walian colleagues have in abundance.
Its as though ego is bred into them.

Anyone who has played sport (wether soccer or rugby) against south wales and lost by narrowest of margins will no doubt have felt they may have been thrashed by the end of night as a result of their ego.

We gogs appear to be more reserved.

It took him two seasons... But remember this was a club in free fall. Its not easy to turn around such a situation when every year you lose more than you win. Loads of examples of that.
He got us playing good winning football again by the end. The first time in years.
Every manager since has benefited from that shift in hope and expectation.
