Why is the player being empowered with the decision?

I have always advocated better contracts for better players.
I was massively critical of Mills with all the 1 year deals which we now know in lots of cases could be extended with the 30 game clauses. But the power should not be with the player. Maybe the player would not have signed originally but those are the choices you make as a manager.

There are valid points about 1 year 1500/1200 and 2nd year at same salary but its the ownership of the decision for me.
Power shifted to the players, a long time ago with freedom of contracts and clubs can't treat players anywhere near the same degree as their property like days gone by. It's just a fact with a glut of players seeking contracts that there is no job security for lower league players so it is understandable that offering a modicum of stability with 2 year deals or options of a second year, will give a litle piece of mind.

I agree with this...

And with regards to Grant I think we just might see his real quality next season if he has a good pre-season.

We dont know really if BH rates him or is part of his plans as the player instigated the deal. I am going to assume though that Grant had talks with BH before he committed a year to us.
Personally I dont see Grant as a good player and really struggle to see where he will fit in with BHs new signings.

With regards JJ then I assume he has been brought in for the CF role or at least 1 of the front 3. Harris as a winger as well and he brought Mc in and retained Rutherford. He also has Fondop, Oswell, Grant all contracted, all tried and as yet still to provide many goal!.

Its an interesting situation and appears BH has shaken it up quite dramatically and at first glance there will be no room for any lack of performance in any position.

Just thought I would talk about the strikers on the JJ striker thread not the contracts

Pagl I don't think Grant would be here if there hadn't been a player instigated clause extension in his contract. There was talk of a contracted player moving on during the start of the transfer window, I have no doubt Grant will be still looking to better his options. I would not give it a second thought if he moved on, and I can't help but wonder if there is an odd release clause on his contract extension were we get next to nothing.

as far as a good preseason bringing out the best of him ....for a full season of football it might sharpen him up for the first couple of games but won't change his attitude.

You could easily be right but I think he deserves a chance to prove us wrong in the best way - on the pitch.

BH has good options up top but the difficult bit will be keeping them all happy & hungry, after all none of then are real kids and I would expect they all believe they should be first choice or certainly first change. Harris sounds very exciting but I will be surprised if Grant does not start on the right of a front 3, he did enough for me against Eistleigh to show he has the ability if he is motivated to do it consistently. If he isn't in the starting 11 then it maybe a pleasant surprise as it will mean we have 3 other strikers showing real form. It's the same as last season, where I thought we would be doing well if Ruthers was being kept out of the 11. I guess BH would have supported Grant opting to stay. Surely BH & BF would have discussed the situation with Grant and whether he was a big part of their plans, otherwise why not make him available for transfer. I couldn't see Grant wanting to stay either if he thought he wouldn't be more or less first choice in BH's plans and confident enough to earn a regular place.

What I was referring to the fact that we seem to lose anybody who looks good at WFC. Keates and Ricketts left but the earliest time a player can leave is January when the transfer window opens. Obviously, this doesn't apply to managers. Hence why I agreed with the comment.

I agree also that January is a good time to off-load the dross. And, many more inferior players have left the club than good ones. However, the problem lies with the loss of good players. If we want to gain promotion, we need to buy and retain those players. We should have good players wanting to join us because of our stadium, our history and our fans. Instead they go to Salford or elsewhere. We all know it's about the money they can get at other clubs. How can we resolve this? It's the question that we've been asking for years, yet nobody fixes this problem. Vicious circle - No money = lesser players = no promotion. A lesser player we buy, who turns out good, we sell to get money. We get nowhere; season in season out.

I'll get my coat and a rope.

Or, do you go for survival in current league for 2 to 3 seasons, underspending the budget and building up a “war chest” for a do or die crack at promotion in the 3rd or 4th season?
Would need backing from the fans, club and even the club cat.
There is the other option of hoping a buyer comes along and drops a load of cash into the club.
Fingers crossed we go a step better this coming season and finally go up.

I recall Cambridge did something similar but it would be counter productive as the fans wouldn’t accept it and crowds would dwindle thereby reducing revenue even further.
