About 4.5k but yeah.

We'd go up to over 5k average for our first season in L2 if we finished bottom half.

However fan ownership has made a difference as I think there has been more buy-in over the last few years. The fans are better appreciated now by the club, the fans trust the people running the club more and fans can appreciate their collective efforts are needed if we are to get back in the FL, sooner rather than later.

Saturday's gate should give the board the confidence to allow DK a bit more scope in his last minute negotiations with more confidence that money spent this week above the original budget, can be recouped through the gate.

Hopefully, Saturday was the start of some bumper gates with only 7 home fixtures remaining and more casuals getting back in the habit of attending games.
Spot on. I also think the Quigley signing and result at Hartlepool, was rewarded by the fans, who turned up in vast numbers on Saturday. It's a 2 way street if the board trust the fans, the fans trust the board. Lots of moans and groans from the floaters about why haven't we signed a striker yet, he's not spent the money he's got, they don't want to get promoted.....all the usual guff.

As you have said, the board now have the confidence, in the walk up crowd to enable them, to go the extra mile and make sure we get the players Dean wants.

An interesting couple of days coming up.

You won't see Bournemouth's attendances taking a dip towards what they were even if they got relegated though because of a worn off novelty. They aren't the only example either.

Agreed. I honestly think if we were lower midtable in league two after a couple of seasons, our average gate would be lower possibly similar overall due to the away gate.

I was very surprised to see how low some of our gates were during the Flynn and Smith years here.

By 2nd tier I don't mean League Two. I guess there's been some confusion here.

What about in the late 80s when we were regularly at bottom of the 4th division getting gates of 1800. Fast forward 30 years and we’re in the league below and mostly getting twice that even when we’re finishing mid-table.

It’s quite ironic when you hear older blokes say they’ve supported this club for x years and never seen football this bad - when we’ve played shite. We’ve got a generation of supporters in their late teens/early 20s who don’t know what league football is so don’t talk to them about shite football when the away team literally could’ve turned up in taxi.

When we do get promoted, it’ll be our younger supporters who deserve it most. I don’t wish to be divisive as I sit firmly in the middle; old enough to remember the mid/late 90s tilt at the (now) League 1 playoffs but young enough not to have been born during the glory years.

Hooliganism would have put some people off as well in that period; crowds were plummeting nationally off a cliff in the early 1980's due to these factors, even at the really successful clubs of that time like Liverpool, Everton and United.

I was one of the many unlucky ones in 1980 from British steel. Finding a job then was as rare as finding a dinosaur tooth, so gates were bound to suffer, it always makes me feel very sad when I look towards the derelict Kop where I stood for those great years, will we ever see it used again? Barring a miracle I can't see it in my lifetime, but I believe in miracles ☺

We could form a team of former BSC steel men. I too was one of them, but young enough to be re trained.

I agree it would be great for the young supporters which some who weren't even born when we were last in the league to see us play league football, when I first started supporting us early 60s we were a struggling old 4th division side.

It wasn't cheap then to go to a match either, it's all relative to the cost of living.
