Away to Southend will be another big test, they will put us under pressure like they did for good periods v Stockport, but so far our midfield hasnt been found wanting defensively in the few tests so far. If PP thought it wasnt working on Monday he had options to change it but preferred to freshen it up offensively to get the game won.
People saying we can’t compete for the title with this squad are batsh’t.

Let's break it down.

Lainton - Not replaced

RHJ - Now has stiff competition from Bryce Hosannah.

Vassell - Replaced by Hayden

Kelleher - Replaced by Tozer

Reckord - Still a starter, has competition from Green

Rutherford - Formation altered, replaced by Brisley, Lennon, French, Cleworth etc.

Harris - Replaced by James Jones

Young - Has competition from Dave Jones

Davies - Still a starter, has competition from McAlinden

Thomas - Still at club but injured, replaced by Hyde

Jeffrey - Replaced by Paul Mullin

Subs: Ponticelli and Durrell replaced by Angus and McAlinden.

Last year's team finished 8th, we will be right up there without a doubt this time. We are absolutely stacked at the back and have depth up front. Only places we are lacking depth in are the goalkeeper and non-attacking midfielders, which should be enough to get us through to January.

And for those saying we can’t compete for the title with this squad, that team beat Yeovil away!

What a simple but effective flag of how we have progressed

Based on Monday's performance, we could have been 3-0 up at half time against one of the more fancied teams in this division. We could absolutely blow some of the lesser teams out of the water in games and therefore there isn't a need for a specialist CDM in these games. If we utilise Dave Jones' game time for those where we are likely to come under more pressure this could work well

The way he sets the team up is JD/LM plays furthest forward, allowing us to change to a 343 if needed and the other two midfielders essentially act as box-to-box players, with one dropping deep if the other makes a supporting run.

When Dave Jones played, the onus was more on Young tonget forward but even then, DJ didn't take up a traditional holding role. He was quite often further up the pitch offering himself for an outball to recycle the play.

The issue as I see it is one that can be addressed by positional coaching so that we don't have situations were we face an overload in the middle due to poor positioning when our attacks break down.

It's still early days and I'm pretty sure if PP thought we desperately needed a holding midfielder we would have signed one or he'll be working on signing someone out of contract.
That’s a good point, just the midfield as it is now is weak to me. It’s one of the position as well as the forwards we were most looking forward to seeing improve, two Jones are good signings. Davies & Young good on their days too. But for that specialist midfielder who breaks play and allows us to play we don’t have that. We could still easily win the league with the squad as it is right now, there’s more than enough quality. But that certain player would have allowed us to be extremely confident & probably bowl over some teams in this league.

I forgot possibly the most important ones:

Dean Keates - Replaced by Phil Parkinson

Andy Davies - Replaced by Steve Parkin

WST - Replaced by Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney

Well said. We have three at the back, so one of the centre backs can step forward to help the midfield. The number 10 and the wing backs are also available as outlets and to step in if needed. The system isn't anywhere near where it will be and some of the players have been with us less than a week.

A lot of people have been criticising the overly defensive style of play Keates used, but now they are losing their minds that we don't have a defensive midfielde. If you look at the targets PP was rumoured to be after he clearly sees a need for more quality in midfield, but none of the players mentioned were defensive midfielders.

The way a couple of posters are talking you'd have thought Notts County battered us whereas in reality they were lucky taking a point home- and we won't play many teams better than them this season.
