Re: Ian Edwards goal v Derby
Was this the season we were relegated?
Away to Bolton near the end of the season at Burnden Park Ian Edwards gave away a penalty defending a corner which they scored. I was in the home end as I hadn't got a ticket for the full away section and was the only person not jumping up and down cheering. They would have been in danger of going down if they hadn't won. Hope this is accurate as my memory is not as good as it was as I remember. |

Re: Ian Edwards goal v Derby
Me and my bro had accidentally gone into the Derby home end so were surrounded by Derby fans. When it went in, it felt like a cartoon grenade had gone off inside me as I tried to calmly look at my brother and feign annoyance. When we got back to the safety of the carpark we jumped about like loons to get the bottled up emotion out of our systems. Happier days.

Ian Edwards scored that wonder goal on 20 September 1980 at the Baseball Ground - we were in League 2 at the time (the equivalent of today's Championship) - it was the only goal of the game - attendance 16,823. In the corresponding fixture we entertained Derby County at the Racecourse on 28 February 1981 - I particularly remember this game for a number of reasons some of which will have to remain confidential BUT I watched the game from the Tech End which was where the Derby fans were housed in what was at the time the traditional away end. All eyes were on a certain Derby striker by the name of Charlie George who had won the FA Cup some years earlier when Arsenal beat Liverpool 2 - 1 - this match finished in a 2 - 2 draw infront of a Racecourse crowd of 6,485. The following season 81 / 82 it all started to go belly up in a big way and we finished 21st and were relegated to Division 3. On 10 April 1982 that season we lost to Bolton Wanderers at the old Burnden Park (which is now an Asda superstore) by a score of 2 - 0 infront of 6,221. The following season 82 - 83 we were relegated yet again down to Division 4 - the glory days of the late 70's were by now truly over. |

We will probably pull in a similar amount or more vs Barrow-in-furness in a non league fixture this Saturday. Wrexham fans were fickle back in the day. They didn't know how good they had it. What happened to the other 10,000 who were there regularly in 1978 a division below ? (Just 2 years earlier). It's no wonder we only sustained Championship football for 4 years. The fans clearly didn't support it well enough Last edited by Back of the Kop; 1st August 2019 at 12.46:57.. |
